For people leaders and HR
You Can’t Be What You Can’t See
Representation done well is the difference between a poster and a practice.
Marian Wright Edelman put it plainly: you cannot be what you cannot see. Representation in leadership is the practical difference between a workplace that promises inclusion and one that actually produces it. The catch is that representation done carelessly looks a lot like tokenism, and tokenism does real harm to the people it claims to help. If you really want to understand the concept of representation, try my book All About Yvie: Into the Oddity.

Overview
What genuine representation requires, and how to avoid the trap of doing it badly
Representation is one of the most misunderstood ideas in DEIA. Some teams treat it as a counting exercise. Others sidestep it entirely because they are worried about getting it wrong. Both approaches have costs.
This keynote separates representation from diversity, names what genuine representation actually looks like in a workplace, and walks through the concrete actions leaders can take, at the hiring stage, in development programmes, and at the leadership table, without sliding into tokenism.
This is the talk for leaders who want their people to genuinely see themselves in the room, and to know the room was built with real intention.
